Our story

AIFIP’s journey began in early 2020, when a small group of passionate Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farmers in Kenya decided to connect, share knowledge, and strengthen their growing industry. Led by David Kiguru and encouraged by Dr. Chrysantus T. Tanga of ICIPE, the group started as a simple WhatsApp community — a space where farmers could exchange ideas, equipment, and experiences.

What began as an informal network quickly gained momentum. In February 2020, the first in-person meeting was held in Nairobi, bringing together BSF enthusiasts and stakeholders who shared one vision: to create a structured, professional voice for the sector. Although progress slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the passion and collaboration continued online.

By June 2021, the group had grown into a movement. With the support of ICIPE, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the East Africa Grain Council, a stakeholder meeting united key players from across the insect farming value chain. Out of that meeting came a renewed commitment to formalize the association and lay the foundation for what would become AIFIP — the Association for Insect Farming and Its Products.

Since then, AIFIP has evolved into a recognized leader in the region, representing farmers, researchers, investors, and policymakers. Today, the association continues to drive the sector forward by promoting sustainable practices, enabling access to finance and knowledge, influencing policy, and fostering innovation.
